Who can participate in Serve Up Pickleball?

Serve Up Pickleball welcomes players of all ages and abilities and experience levels. Our programs are designed to provide a supportive, encouraging environment where participants can learn pickleball, stay active, build confidence, socialize, and have fun. Beginners are always welcome. No previous pickleball experience is required.

Do I need to know how to play pickleball?

Not at all! Our beginner programs start with the basics and allow participants to learn at their own pace. Players can work on skills such as paddle control, hand-eye coordination, serving and returning, dinking and volleys, court positioning, basic rules and scoring, playing with a partner, and sportsmanship and social interaction. Our goal is progress, participation, and having a positive experience on the court.

What is the mission of Serve Up Pickleball?

Our mission is to create more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get on the court, learn new skills, build confidence, make connections, and become part of the pickleball community. We believe pickleball can be more than a sport, it can be a way to encourage physical activity, independence, social connection, confidence, and community participation.

Are programs only for individuals with disabilities?

No. Serve Up Pickleball is built around inclusion. Our programs may include individuals with disabilities, family members, friends, peers, and other community participants depending on the specific class or event. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to play, learn, connect, and belong.

What ages can participate?

Programs may be offered for children, teens, adults, and seniors. Age requirements may vary depending on the class, clinic, workshop, or event. Check the individual program listing for specific age information.

Where are classes held?

Serve Up Pickleball works with pickleball facilities and community locations to offer programs at different locations. This allows us to bring pickleball opportunities directly into communities and offer programs at a variety of facilities. Check our Events & Classes page for current locations and schedules.

Question 7

How many players are in each class?

Accepted Answer

We believe smaller groups create a better learning experience. Class size may vary by program, but we aim to keep groups small enough for participants to receive instruction, encouragement, and plenty of time on the court. The maximum number of participants will be listed with each program.

Question 8

What if I need extra assistance?

Accepted Answer

Participants who require additional assistance are welcome to attend with their family member, caregiver, Direct Support Professional (DSP), or other support person. Please let us know about any accommodations or support needs when registering so we can help create the best possible experience. Serve Up Pickleball instructors and volunteers provide pickleball instruction and program support but do not replace a participant's required 1:1 support professional.

Do you provide adaptive instruction?

We understand that everyone learns differently. Whenever possible, instructors may adjust demonstrations, communication, pacing, drills, equipment, and activities to help participants successfully engage in the program. We encourage families and support teams to share helpful information with us before the first class.

Can a parent, caregiver, DSP, or support professional attend?

Absolutely. We want participants to feel comfortable and supported. Parents, caregivers, DSPs, and support professionals are welcome when their presence is appropriate or necessary for the participant.

Question 11

Do I need my own paddle?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Paddles and pickleballs may be available for participants who do not have their own equipment. If equipment requirements are different for a particular program, they will be listed when you register. Please wear comfortable clothing and court-appropriate athletic shoes.

Question 12

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and court-appropriate athletic shoes with non-marking soles (court sneakers are prefered) Dress for movement and light physical activity. Layers are recommended for indoor facilities that may vary in temperature.

Do you offer private lessons?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Private and small-group lessons may be available upon request. Contact us to discuss the participant's goals, experience level, location, and scheduling.

What happens if I miss a class?

Accepted Answer

Cancellation and make-up policies may vary depending on the program and facility. Any applicable cancellation requirements will be provided during registration. Because court space and instructors are reserved in advance, we ask participants and families to provide as much notice as possible when they cannot attend.

Are your instructors certified?

YES! Instructor qualifications may vary by program. Serve Up Pickleball seeks instructors who are knowledgeable, encouraging, patient, and comfortable working with players with different learning styles and abilities. Instructor information and credentials may be provided with individual program listings.

Question 16

Do you accept NY Self-Direction?

Accepted Answer

Serve Up Pickleball welcomes participants using OPWDD Self-Direction. Depending on the participant's approved budget, service category, Fiscal Intermediary (FI), and individual plan, program expenses may be eligible for Self-Direction funding. Approval is determined by the participant's Self-Direction team and Fiscal Intermediary. We are happy to provide program descriptions, invoices, attendance information, and other documentation that may be requested for authorization or billing. Please note: eligibility for Self-Direction funding or reimbursement depends on the participant's approved plan, budget, Fiscal Intermediary, and Self-Direction team. Approval is not guaranteed.

Question 17

Do you offer direct billing?

Direct billing may be available with participating Fiscal Intermediary (FI) agencies, subject to approval and the requirements of the participant's Self-Direction plan. Contact us before registering if you would like to use Self-Direction funding so we can discuss the process with you and your support team.

Question 18

Can I pay privately?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Participants who are not using Self-Direction funding may register and pay privately for available programs. Pricing will be clearly listed for each class, workshop, clinic, session, or event.

What documentation can you provide for Self-Direction?

We can provide program descriptions, invoices, attendance records, and other documentation that may be requested by your Fiscal Intermediary or Self-Direction team for authorization or billing purposes. Contact us to discuss your specific documentation needs.

Can my facility work with Serve Up Pickleball?

Yes! We are actively looking for welcoming facilities interested in hosting Serve Up Pickleball lessons, clinics, workshops, social play, and special events. Our goal is to develop partnerships that benefit participants, facilities, instructors, and the surrounding community. You provide the courts. We bring the program and community. Absolutely and greatly appreciated! Volunteer opportunities may be available for students seeking community service hours, experienced pickleball players who want to give back, retirees, families, and community members.
